Essential oils can help you sleep and relax, or improve your skin or digestion — their benefits go well beyond a pleasant smell. Essential oils can have a healing effect mentally, physically, and emotionally. You can apply them directly onto your skin, inhaling, or use through a diffuser.

How can I choose and use essential oils?

The essential oil that you choose will depend on the purpose—do you want it to help elevate your mood, improve a health condition or do you need something to treat a burn? There is no “laundry list” that specifies which essential oil is used to treat which health condition. Instead, you need to be proactive about doing research. A good place to start is to get a book about therapeutic aromatherapy. Be sure to pay attention to cautions for each oil and application method.

Here are some of the most common essential oils and their powerful health benefits:

1. Lavender: This highly versatile oil is best used for its soothing properties. Try dabbing a drop of this oil on skin to help heal blemishes or add a few drops to your shampoo to improve scalp health.

7. Chamomile: This oil has powerful calming benefits. It is also an effective mood booster. Chamomile can be used in steam or vapor therapy to help relieve stress.

8. Ylang -Ylang: This oil has calming properties and is beneficial for all skin types—especially oily, congested, or inflamed skin. Ylang-Ylang has a sweet flowery fragrance and can be found in a variety of different skin and hair products. 10. Eucalyptus: This is a great oil to have on hand if you get frequent colds or suffer from allergies that affect your breathing and make you congested. Eucalyptus can be used to relieve sore muscles and help clear sinuses. It also has many antibacterial properties and has been known to stimulate the immune system. Use it in a vaporizer to loosen up a congested chest or apply it diluted to the inside of your nose to relieve nasal congestion. But never ingest it or use it on your skin undiluted, as it can be irritating.
